Thousands of vacationers are lured to the casinos of the Caribbean each year in the hope of mixing a little good luck with their holiday sun.

Here are some of the major gambling destinations.

The Bahamas offers great gambling facilities on Grand Bahama, Paradise Island and in Nassau. One of the most impressive casinos in the world is at the huge Atlantis Paradise Island Resort which offers one of the largest gaming facilities in the world. 46 blackack, 10 craps, 10 roulette, two baccarat tables and almost 1,000 slot machines (ranging from 25¢ to $100) keep gamblers busy 24 hours a day.

The pink and purple casino at the Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino on Cable Beach, Nassau draws players to its blackjack, craps, baccarat, mini-baccarat, Big Six and Derby tables. Others enjoy the 750 slot machines.

On Grand Bahama, The Isle of Capri, Westin & Sheraton at Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort, brings together the splendor of the tropics and the excitement of casino gaming. This Caribbean-themed luxury casino boasts over 350 slot and video games, 50 video poker machines and 33 table games including black jack, craps, roulette, and mini baccarat.

Aruba offers eleven casinos to choose from. In addition to blackjack, poker, craps, roulette, baccarat, and hundreds of slot machines, Aruba's casinos offer Caribbean Stud Poker, invented in 1988 in Aruba and now popular all over the world. Gaming in Aruba generally runs from mid-day to just before dawn. The Copacabana Casino at the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort is a popular choice.

Puerto Rico has a dozen or so casinos. In San Juan the El San Juan Hotel & Casino reopened in 1995 following a $45 million renovation. Located just off the lobby of the hotel, the 10,000 square-foot casino was totally remodelled offering a more relaxed atmosphere. As well as the casino, the hotel offers seven award winning restaurants.

A long time favorite with gamblers is Sint Maarten which boasts a number of top-class casinos including Great Bay Beach Hotel & Casino, Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino, Divi Little Bay Beach Resort and the 12,000 sq. ft. casino at Princess Port de Plaisance Resort.

Try your hand at many other casinos in the region including the Divi Carina Bay, on St. Croix (U.S.V.I), Torarica Hotel & Casino in Paramaribo, Suriname or the Royal Beach Casino at the Marriott St. Kitts Royal Resort on the island of St. Kitts.

Although generally more relaxed than their American and European counterparts, it is best to call ahead and check on the dress code before heading out. Also make sure that casino is going to be open - only a few casinos are open 24 hours a day.
